How often should kids see the dentist?

When to schedule a child's first visit, and how often to come back.

The American Dental Association recommends a child's first dental visit within six months of the first tooth coming in, and no later than the first birthday. Early visits are short and gentle, and they help kids get comfortable with the dentist before anything ever hurts.

After that, most children see the dentist about every six months, though your dentist may suggest a different schedule based on your child's teeth.

At home, brush your child's teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste: a smear the size of a grain of rice for children under three, and a pea-sized amount from age three. Help with brushing until your child can do it well on their own.
